Defense Programs

Harris Defense Programs business is a major developer, supplier and integrator of communications and information processing products, systems, and networks for a diverse base of aerospace, terrestrial and maritime programs. Harris supports the ongoing transformation of communications for U.S. and international customers to network-centric architectures that support real-time situational awareness in combat conditions. Harris technologies are at play at all levels of the military's Global Information Grid, including space, theater and tactical levels, as well as in the air, on the ground and at sea.

Major technology areas include: satellite communications terminals for mobile ground, fixed-site and shipboard applications; large, deployable satellite antenna reflectors; flat-panel, phased-array and single-mission antennas; aviation electronics for military jets and helicopters, including radios, digital maps, modems, sensors, data buses, fiber optics and micro electronics; and high-speed data links and data networks for wireless communications and smart weapons.

For example, a high-speed digital data link system called Hawklink designed for the Navy's LAMPS helicopter transmits tactical video, radar, acoustic and other sensor data from the helicopters to their host surface ships at distances greater than 100 nautical miles and at data rates exceeding 21 megabits per second.

Harris Defense Programs also provides secure, high-speed wireless local area networking and phased array capabilities for wireless transmission systems, and is developing network-centric communications system architectures and technologies that will link sensors, platforms, weapons, and soldiers using open architectures and mobile ad hoc networking capabilities.

Harris mobile ad hoc networking, for example, allows the military to take its communications infrastructure with it, creating mobile, self-forming and self-healing communication links across the battlefield. The new Harris High-band Networking Radio provides the military with wireless, long-range, high-bandwidth, communications on-the-move, using a Harris-developed waveform to automatically select the best communications path available.

Harris International Government Systems offers international customers a single, turnkey source for obtaining the very best communications technologies on the market today, along with the systems expertise to link them into seamless, interoperable networks. We offer solutions for applications ranging from border surveillance and C4ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) to emergency response, national avionics, and individual communications products.
